AI Tool Evaluates Reading Skills of 700,000 Students Across India’s Schools

Quick Take

  • TARA AI tool evaluates reading skills for 700,000+ students across 1,200 schools nationwide
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched India’s largest reading fluency assessment exercise
  • IIT Bombay’s speech processing technology measures reading speed, accuracy, and expression
  • Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan adopted TARA for students in Grades 3-8 in English and Hindi
  • Initiative creates opportunities for EdTech companies developing AI-powered educational solutions

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has launched TARA in what marks India’s largest reading fluency assessment to date. More than 700,000 students across 1,200 schools nationwide are being evaluated through this groundbreaking initiative. The artificial intelligence-powered tool addresses a fundamental challenge in Indian education by measuring reading speed, accuracy, and expression across diverse student populations.

AI Solution Tackles Critical Education Gap

TARA harnesses artificial intelligence to give teachers real-time data on student performance. This allows educators to quickly spot learning gaps and create targeted interventions. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has already adopted TARA for students in Grades 3-8, supporting assessments in both English and Hindi.

This broad deployment provides educators with insights into reading development that were previously impossible to obtain. Teachers now receive detailed performance metrics that eliminate the need for time-consuming manual assessment processes.

IIT Bombay’s Technical Breakthrough

Professor Preeti Rao from IIT Bombay’s Department of Electrical Engineering spearheaded the project development. TARA employs speech processing and machine learning to generate precise assessments by analyzing audio recordings of children reading passages aloud.

The tool measures Words Correct Per Minute and evaluates expression through phrasing, intonation, and stress patterns. This comprehensive approach gives teachers detailed feedback on each student’s reading development through systematic audio analysis.

“TARA fills this gap by enabling audio recording, offering individual performance metrics, and generating detailed reports for entire classes, schools, or regions through a centralized dashboard,” she noted.

New Market Opportunities Emerge

The TARA launch demonstrates growing government support for AI education tools. This creates significant opportunities for EdTech startups to learn from this successful public-private partnership model. IIT Bombay secured funding from the Tata Centre of Technology and Design and the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation Fellowship.

This government commitment to digital education tools opens fresh market segments for companies developing AI-powered assessment solutions for other subjects. The validation process and gradual scaling approach provide a blueprint for educational AI applications across multiple disciplines.

Proven Business Impact and Validation

TARA’s reliability has been validated against human expert assessments. This demonstrates the viability of AI applications in education and establishes credibility for similar educational technology initiatives seeking market acceptance.

The initiative shows how academic institutions can successfully partner with government bodies for large-scale deployments. Business leaders in EdTech should take note of the importance of expert validation and systematic scaling in educational AI applications.

Educational Market Transformation

The launch represents a shift toward integrated educational technologies that could dramatically improve literacy rates nationwide. This creates a foundation for more advanced educational AI applications across mathematics, science, and language learning.

The Minister emphasized technology’s role in fostering a more literate society and expressed optimism that TARA will empower both teachers and students. The tool makes reading assessment more engaging for young learners while providing actionable data for educators.

This initiative paves the way for continued innovation in educational practices. Indian institutions are now positioned to witness tangible benefits from AI-powered assessment tools, with the ultimate goal of equipping every child with foundational reading skills through technology-enhanced learning.
